Each year on Dec. 31, copyright protection expires on many well-known literary, artistic and musical works — but not this year. On Oct. 27, 1998, President Clinton signed the Sonny Bono Copyright Term Extension Act,(1) which halts for 20 years the flow of U.S. copyrighted works into the public domain.
