Thomas D. Washburne
Experience
Thomas D. Washburne practices law with Ober|Kaler’s Estates and Trusts Group.
In matters of estate planning and administration, Tom represents high net worth individuals in all facets of estate planning in order to minimize exposure to federal estate tax. He represents estates and trusts in the administration process, including audit proceedings with the Internal Revenue Service.
Tom also provides counsel on tax planning and avoidance matters for high net worth individuals. He represents individuals, companies and institutions in the resolution of federal, state and local tax controversies.
Tom handles all phases of general litigation, trial and appeal in business, commercial and products liability matters. He has particular experience in high profile, public-interest cases such as corporate misconduct defense, asserted officer/director fraud, business defamation, professional malpractice and personal misconduct claims. His practice includes civil and criminal white collar defense, including defense of business prosecutions and grand jury investigations.
Tom has tried numerous civil and criminal cases (jury and non jury) in the United States District Court for the Districts of Maryland and Pennsylvania, and in various Circuit Courts of Maryland and Delaware. His trial experience includes representation of physicians and hospitals in medical malpractice cases and general defense work for property and casualty insurers. He has argued appeals before the United States Court of Appeals for the Fourth Circuit, the Court of Appeals of Maryland and the Maryland Court of Special Appeals.
He is the former chair of the Maryland Trial Lawyers Association.
