Jim Wieland Named "Outstanding Healthcare IT Lawyer" by Nightingale's Healthcare News

BALTIMORE – December 3, 2009 The law firm Ober|Kaler announced today that James B. Wieland, a principal in the firm's Health Law Group, has been selected by Nightingale's Healthcare News for its 2009 ranking of "Outstanding Healthcare IT Lawyer." Nominated by clients and colleagues, Mr. Wieland is one of only ten attorneys from across the country selected for the list.
This year's ranking marks the second time that Mr. Wieland has been honored by Nightingale's. In 2006, he was named an "Outstanding Physician Practice Lawyer."
Mr. Wieland leads Ober|Kaler's Healthcare Information Privacy, Security and Technology practice. He provides counsel on all aspects of information privacy and security matters, including state laws, the HIPAA Privacy and Security rules, Regional Health Information Systems (RHIOs), Health Information Exchanges (HIEs), and the Federal Trade Commission Red Flags Rule, as well as organizational, contracting and regulatory issues. He also serves as general counsel to a national association of medical billing companies and to a national association of specialty physician practice managers.
In 2006, Mr. Wieland was appointed by then-Governor Robert Ehrlich to the Task Force to Study Electronic Health Records (EHR), a blue ribbon panel reporting directly to the Maryland legislature on Electronic Health Records, ePrescribing, and Regional Health Information Organizations. He was subsequently designated as the lead person for the EHR working group within the Task Force.
Mr. Wieland served on the Board of Directors of the American Health Lawyers Association and its predecessor entity from 1993 to 1999. He is a frequent author and lecturer on health care regulatory topics and has served as an associate member of the faculty of Johns Hopkins University.
Mr. Wieland is a graduate of the University of Minnesota and University of Minnesota School of Law. He resides in Lutherville, Maryland.
