Life After Two Tours
August 2011
Justice for Warriors (National Veterans Legal Services Program Newsletter)
Ober|Kaler's Geoff Tobias was featured in a profile of an army sergeant working to obtain military benefits following injuries sustained during two tours in Iraq.
Working on a pro bono basis, Geoff convinced the Department of Veterans Affairs to increase the sergeant's disability rating and assisted him in securing a permanent disability retirement from the military. Geoff was then tasked with helping him obtain Combat-Related Special Compensation (CRSC), a benefit for which he had previously been turned down.
Geoff prepared an exhaustive CRSC application, including numerous pages of medical records and other documentation showing how the sergeant's injuries were incurred. He also secured statements from other soldiers who had witnessed how the injuries were incurred. Finally, he submitted a legal memo describing in detail how the injuries were combat-related. In July 2011, the sergeant received notice that the VA had re-evaluated his case and decided to award him CRSC.
Geoff's work was coordinated through Lawyers Serving Warriors, a program offered by the National Veterans Legal Services Program to provide pro bono legal assistance to veterans.
