Ober|Kaler Awards $35,000 in Grants to Three Nonprofits
November 18, 2011
Law Firm’s Employees Select Organizations Dedicated to Helping At-risk Youth
BALTIMORE, MD, November 18, 2011 – Baltimore-based law firm Ober|Kaler announced the recipients of its Community Grants Program today. The annual program awards $35,000 in grants to three nonprofit community organizations dedicated to improving the lives of at-risk youth in the Baltimore and Washington, DC metro areas. Truth Organization for Youth and Beacon House will each receive a $10,000 Ober|Kaler Community Grant. A special $15,000 grant will go to Rebuilding Together Baltimore. In addition to awarding the grant, employees of the firm will volunteer their time to this program. A detailed description of each organization is listed below.
“We are proud to be able to give back to the communities where we live and work. Our firm especially recognizes our obligation to help underprivileged children, since they are among those most in need”, said attorney Joseph Kovars, chair of Ober|Kaler’s Community Grants Committee.
The Ober|Kaler Community Grants Program was established in 2003 on the occasion of the firm’s 100th anniversary. A committee comprised of the firm’s principals, associates and staff members chose this year’s recipients – from approximately 50 applications -- for their specific programs focused on enriching the lives of underprivileged children, improving living standards for lower income families with children, and creating educational opportunities for at-risk youth. The committee based its selection on perceived need, the community served and the impact the grant would have on the selected organization.
- Truth Organization for Youth will receive a $10,000 grant. The grant will be used to assist approximately 40 Baltimore City youths who have been released from the juvenile justice system, or are school drop outs, or have low attendance and poor grades, with an after school mentoring and tutoring program, including helping kids obtain GED degrees.
- Beacon House will also receive a $10,000 grant. This grant will help approximately 125 children from DC’s Ward 5 with an after school program that includes a nutritious meal, help with homework, tutoring and college prep programs.
- Rebuilding Together Baltimore will receive a $15,000 grant for its Home Repair for Child Occupied Homes Program. The grant will be used to help repair approximately 4 homes in Baltimore City that are owned by low income families with children. The repairs will make the homes warmer, safer and drier. Ober|Kaler will also participate as volunteers in the annual repair “blitz” in April called Rebuilding Day.
