December 27, 2011

Ober|Kaler is pleased to announce that two of its lawyers, Virginia B. Evans and Joshua J. Freemire, are among the contributing authors of the 2012 edition of Health Law and Compliance Update.

Released by Wolters Kluwer earlier this month, Health Law and Compliance Update provides the latest on emerging issues in health law and health care compliance. The book is published yearly and is authored by experts from some of the most prestigious health care organizations and law and consulting firms. The 2012 edition includes chapters on voluntary disclosures, provider and supplier enrollment, fair market valuations, adjusting hospital strategies in the face of health care reform, fraud and abuse, labor and employment, ICD-10 and corporate compliance, personalized medicine and compliance issues in clinical research.

Ms. Evans and Mr. Freemire contributed the chapter “Voluntary Disclosures: The Good, the Worrisome, and the Unknown.”

Ms. Evans is a principal in Ober|Kaler’s Government Investigations and White Collar Defense Group and has over 28 years of experience in health care and federal law enforcement. Before joining the firm, she was managing director of the health care practice of an international regulatory consulting and investigative firm. She currently serves as a compliance expert for a large pharmaceutical manufacturer. Earlier in her career, she led the mid-Atlantic health care forensic practice at a Big Four accounting firm. Ms. Evans also spent 13 years with the U.S. Attorney’s office for the District of Maryland, including two years as chief of the civil division, where she managed the ACE/health care fraud unit and financial litigation section.

Mr. Freemire is an associate in Ober|Kaler’s Health Group. He represents health care providers on regulatory compliance, licensing, reimbursement, and structuring business transactions with a primary focus on fraud and abuse, health care information technology and state and federal privacy laws. He is the author of numerous articles on health care law. Mr. Freemire was selected as a “Maryland Super Lawyers Rising Star” in 2010 and 2012.
