Disruptive Physicians: A Roadmap to Avoid Dangerous Behavior

January 18, 2012

By: Sarah E. Swank and Steven R. Smith

Disruptive physician behavior not only causes workflow issues and employee dissatisfaction, but is also linked to bad clinical outcomes. The Ober|Kaler Health Care General Counsel Institute presented a webinar defining disruptive behavior and discussing real life examples. Presenters Steven R. Smith and Sarah E. Swank walked through the AMA and Joint Commission guidelines, and offered guidance on the health care organization’s requirements for education, prevention and corrective action. Key changes to the medical staff bylaw, medical staff hearings and liability issues were also discussed.
