Serving the Community

The story of Ober|Kaler’s community involvement is a story of leadership. From Baltimore to Fairfax, Annapolis to Anacostia, Federal Hill to Capitol Hill, our attorneys are making a difference in the lives of those around us.

Combined with the pro bono legal work we undertake and the Ober|Kaler Community Grants Program, the community service and leadership we provide to nonprofit civic organizations, professional associations and educational institutions puts us among the most committed and active groups of professionals in the Baltimore-Washington area.

Like our attorneys and professionals, the types of organizations we work with and the nature of their constituencies are extremely diverse. While there are no formal guidelines with respect to how much time, effort or money our colleagues at Ober|Kaler should offer, or where efforts should be directed, we support and encourage every single person’s contribution and help identify opportunities for those looking to serve and lead.

Dozens of attorneys hold leading roles with nonprofits throughout the region. We work with organizations that provide career and life skills training to the disadvantaged, and we spend time helping children learn to sail, play soccer, climb mountains, hike and challenge them physically and mentally through athletics. We help deliver food to the hungry, and we serve as elected representatives of the communities we live in. We lead groups that mount environmental efforts to save the Chesapeake Bay watershed, and we help nonprofits organize and manage complex health care outreach efforts.

Ober|Kaler lawyers teach children and adults to read and manage their finances. We mentor law students, and we nurture aspiring artists and support the venues that will showcase their talents. Our attorneys serve on boards of public and private schools and higher education institutions, hold teaching positions, and mentor students at colleges and universities. Many hold appointments with civic and municipal organizations, and serve on state task forces and commissions.

One of our greatest success stories is our board placement program, administered through Business Volunteers Unlimited (BVU), through which our lawyers provide governance and direction to organizations whose missions are close to their hearts. Since 2008, more than 20 Ober|Kaler lawyers have joined the boards of area nonprofits.

Ober|Kaler’s dedicated professionals, administrators and staff are shaping the future of the communities where we live and work.
